January 31, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Junior Mark Magnowski had two goals and an assist to lead the ninth-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 5-1 win at Brown on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. It was the second time this season Magnowski has recorded three points in a win at Brown.
Princeton jumped all over Brown in the opening period and wasted little time setting the tone in the game as Princeton registered the first 12 shots of the game and had a 2-0 lead before Brown was able to muster a shot on goal.
Sophomore Mike Kramer gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with his third goal of the season at 4:11 of the period. Freshman Brodie Zuk intercepted a Brown clearing attempt at the blueline and the fed Kramer low, who beat Brown netminder Michael Clemente through the five-hole, to put the Tigers ahead for good. The assist was the first point of Zuk's collegiate career.
Junior Jody Pederson made it a 2-0 game when he connected on a point-blast at 10:22 on the power play. Skating with a two-man advantage, junior Kevin Kaiser won an offensive zone face-off back to Pederson, who trading the puck with classmate Cam Ritchie before taking a blast that beat Clemente. In between the Tiger goals, Kaiser had a great chance of his own, ringing a shot off the cross bar.
The Tigers continued to control things in the second period and converted for their second power-play goal at 2:21. Magnowski led sophomore Matt Arhontas into the zone with a pass and Arhontas managed a backhanded shot. It was an easy stop for Clemente, but the rebound bounced in front and junior Tyler Beachell pounced on the rebound for his second goal of the year.
Princeton then stretched its lead to four goals at 11:57 when Magnowski scored his eighth goal of the year. He and Arhontas worked down low as a penalty expired and just after the kill ended, Arhontas fed Magnowski in front of the net where he beat Clemente high on the shot side.
Brown got on the scoreboard at 2:30 of the third period when Bobby Farnham scored on a one-timer, but Magnowski finished off the game with a goal 12:46 as he slid home the rebound of a Pederson point shot for the Tigers fifth goal and his team-leading ninth of the year.
Princeton junior goaltender Zane Kalemba made 24 saves for the win while Clemente made 42 in the loss. Princeton outshot Brown 47-25.
Princeton improved to 15-6 overall and 9-5 in the ECAC with the win. The Tigers visit Colgate next Friday night at 7 p.m.
