Ritchie's Overtime Goal Lift Princeton to 3-2 Win
February 06, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Sophomore Cam Ritchie picked a perfect time to pick up his first goal of the season, scoring with 42 seconds left in overtime to lift the 10th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 3-2 win at Colgate on Friday night. It was Princeton's second overtime win over Colgate this season.
Princeton jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game only to have Colgate chip away until evening the game at 2-2 midway through the third period. The game went to overtime and seconds after what appeared to be a game-winning goal by senior Brett Wilson, Ritchie converted on a point shot to lift Princeton to the win.
Colgate's Brian Day was whistled for a penalty when he slashed the stick out of the hands of Princeton junior defenseman Brad Schroeder in the defensive zone. The Tigers, who were 0-4 on the power play entering overtime, did not let the puck leave the offensive zone on the power play before Ritchie netted the game winner. Moments before, Wilson knocked in a loose rebound off a shot from senior Lee Jubinville, but the goal was whistled down before the puck crossed the line.
Following the whistle, junior Mark Magnowski won the faceoff and Princeton kept the puck in the zone with Ritchie scoring through a screen. Sophomore Kevin Lohry, who scored the game winner against Colgate in November, and freshman Derrick Pallis added assists.
Princeton went ahead in the game with 16 seconds left in the first period on junior Dan Bartlett's seventh goal of the season. Following a Colgate icing, Wilson won an offensive zone draw back to Ritchie, who had a point shot blocked, but Bartlett was able to knock the puck in following touches by Jubinville and Wilson.
Magnowski made the score 2-0 three minutes into the second period with his team-leading 10th goal of the year off the rush. Sophomore Taylor Fedun started the play by skating end-to-end. Once in the Colgate zone, he fed Lohry, who dropped it to Magnowski trailing the play and the junior beat Colgate netminder Charles Long on the glove side for a 2-0 lead.
Francois Brisebois made the score 2-1 at 13:28 of the second as Colgate gained some momentum in the period and Brisebois jumped on the rebound of a blocked shot as he was fresh on the ice and beat Princeton junior goaltender Zane Kalemba. Colgate then evened it in the third period when David McIntyre scored on a delayed penalty from the doorstep.
Kalemba finished the game with 20 saves in picking up the win, while Long stopped 28 Princeton shots. The Tigers outshot Colgate 31-22.
Princeton improved to 16-6 overall and 10-5 in the league with the win. The Tigers are back in action tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Cornell.
