Squash Sweeps Navy, Prepares For Showdown With No. 3 Rochester
December 12, 2009 | Men's Squash
A thrilling 3-2 win for Clay Blackiston at the No. 6 position helped the No. 2 Princeton men's squash team to a 9-0 sweep of Navy in the final home match of 2009. The Tigers will now head to No. 3 Rochester for a Sunday showdown.
Princeton improved to 5-0 on the season with the victory, which saw another three-game sweep at the No. 1 position from freshman Todd Harrity. Junior David Letourneau also swept three games to win at No. 2, but there were a handful of tight matches, especially at the sixth spot. Blackiston trailed Hunter Bouchard 1-0 and 2-1 before winning a tense 12-10 fifth game to take the match.
"Navy gave us a very good match today and it was perfect preparation for this Sunday's match up at Rochester," head coach Bob Callahan said. "The guys played well and are ready for a great match on Sunday. Peter Sopher was particularly strong after losing the first game and Nikhil Seth, Steve Harrington and James Thorman played very solidly as well. Clay Blackiston took on a very strong and determined opponent and that proved to be the most exciting match of the evening going down to 12-10 in the fifth game."
Princeton now focuses on undefeated Rochester, which placed third at the CSA team championships last season. The Tigers defeated the Yellowjackets twice last season, although the team semifinal showdown proved to be a tougher match for Princeton.
