Shorthanded Squash Falls To No. 3 Rochester In 5-4 Thriller
December 13, 2009 | Men's Squash
Without the services of 2009 All-America honorees Chris Callis, Kelly Shannon or David Canner, the second-ranked Princeton men's squash team made a valiant push to hold off the third-ranked and undefeated Rochester Yellowjackets Sunday afternoon in the Tigers' final match before winter break. Rochester picked up a key late win to hold off the Tigers for a 5-4 victory.
Playing a three-shift format, Rochester was able to maintain a one-match lead throughout the tense battle until Andres Duany finished off a 14-12, 11-7, 8-11, 11-5 victory over David Pena at the No. 4 position to give the YellowJackets a 5-3 edge. Princeton's freshman No. 1 player, Todd Harrity, remained unbeaten by topping Ben Fischer 3-0 in the final match.
A victory by Princeton's Clay Blackiston was the only Tiger win in the first shift, but Princeton was able to even it at 3-3 after two shifts. Junior Peter Sopher earned a 3-0 win over Matt Domenick at No. 5 and, in the match of the day, junior No. 2 David Letourneau rallied from an 0-2 hole to defeat Hameed Ahmed 11-13, 9-11, 11-3, 11-8, 11-8.
Rochester got a win at No. 7 from Will Newnham to go up 4-3, and Duany won a close four-set match at No. 4 to clinch the win.
