Men's Volleyball Raises "Movember" Money
December 03, 2009 | Men's Volleyball
The Princeton men's volleyball team, in the midst of its offseason preparations for the 2010 schedule, has taken time to unite for an even greater cause. The team, celebrating the "Movember" theme, raised $500 and grew moustaches to raise both money and awareness of men's health issues — specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

“After Dig Pink, the team wanted to keep helping out a great cause," said senior captain Carl Hamming. "We thought Movember would be a great opportunity for us to do something fun to raise money for prostate cancer awareness and LIVESTRONG. It was also the perfect opportunity to see who on the team could actually grow a moustache. It was a fun thing for us to do that was definitely noticed on campus. I can only hope that Movember becomes a Princeton men's volleyball tradition.”
This past "Movember," the money raised in the U.S. will be split between the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The Prostate Cancer Foundation will use the money raised by Movember to fund research to find better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer.
“I am proud that the guys are going out and finding creative ways to
get involved in the broader community," head coach Sam Shweisky said.
"I think we all really enjoyed raising money and awareness for the Dig
Pink event and that served as a catalyst for this event. Never being
one to sit on the sidelines I grew my mo with the rest of the team in
support of men's health and prostate cancer awareness.”
The Lance Armstrong Foundation will use the money raised by Movember to fund:
• the LIVESTRONG Young Adult Alliance program which has the goal of improving survival rates and quality of life for young adults with cancer between the ages of 15 and 40.
• research initiatives to further understand the biology of adolescent and young adult cancers.
To date, Movember has raised $47 million globally making it the world's largest charity event for men. Significantly, awareness of men's health issues has improved with Movember helping to spread important health messages directly to millions of Mo Bros & Sistas around the world.
