Wrestling Opens EIWA Season With 38-12 Home Victory
December 05, 2009 | Wrestling
The consistent upswing of the Princeton wrestling program continued at Dillon Gym Friday night, as the Tigers opened their 2009-10 dual meet season with a 38-12 victory over EIWA rival Franklin & Marshall. Princeton will look to complete its first weekend with a winning record when it hosts VMI and Rutgers Saturday afternoon.
Freshman 125-pounder Garrett Frey, whose win in the Binghamton Open two weeks ago was an early sign of progression this season, earned his first home victory without having to break a sweat. His forfeit win, along with one for classmate Luis Ramos at 141 pounds, gave Princeton a 12-3 lead over Franklin & Marshall through three matches.
Sophomore Daniel Kolodzik followed with a second-period pin at 149 pounds to open an 18-3 lead. Senior tri-captain Danny Scotton, whose close win last season helped Princeton to a road win at F&M, had an easier time Friday night; his first-period pin of David Pucci opened a 21-point lead for the Tigers with only five matches remaining.
Sophomore Andy Lowy picked up a 21-5 technical fall at 165 pounds and, following an F&M pin, Tiger sophomore Kurt Brendel won a close 9-6 match against Matt Latessa. Princeton got one more forfeit win for freshman Charles Fox to close the 38-12 win.
Princeton will take on VMI at 1:30 Saturday and will close the tri-meet against in-state rival Rutgers. A highlight match there will likely come at 125 pounds, where a pair of New Jersey's top recruits could face off. Frey, a Blair Academy product who is now 12-1 on the season, could take on Vincent DellaFave, a two-time NJSIAA champion.
