Wrestling Falls At No. 3 Cornell, Will Take On Columbia And Drexel Sunday
February 14, 2009 | Wrestling
The Princeton wrestling team faced EIWA favorite and NCAA championship contender Cornell Saturday in Ithaca, and the third-ranked Big Red proved their strength with a 54-0 victory over the Tigers.
Without heavyweight Stephen Turner available, Princeton was forced to forfeit three weight classes, and then the Tigers still had to deal with four wrestlers ranked between first and sixth in the latest national rankings. Princeton juniors Robert Benitez and Mike Alvarez both took on the No. 1 wrestlers at their respective weight classes, while senior captain Marty Everin took on the defending national champion at 157 pounds.
The two Princeton wrestlers who were able to go the distance were a pair of freshmen. 149-pounder Daniel Kolodzik lost by 5-0 decision to Eric McGill, while 184-pounder Kurt Brendel lost by a 13-3 major decision to Justin Kerber, currently ranked 16th at the weight class.
Princeton will now head to New York City to compete with Columbia (1 p.m.) and Drexel (3 p.m.) tomorrow.
