Monday Men's Lax: Barnes, Fiorito Honored By Ivy League; Tigers Now Ranked Third; Lowe A Hall-of-Fame Candidate
March 09, 2009 | Men's Lacrosse
Paul Barnes, whose domination of the face-off X enabled Princeton to defeat UMBC Friday night, has been named Ivy League Co-Player of the Week for men's lacrosse.
Tyler Fiorito, the freshman goalie who had a .667 save percentage for the week and who made 10 saves against UMBC, was named Ivy Rookie of the Week.
Princeton's 6-5 win over UMBC Friday night in Baltimore and 15-6 win over Manhattan at home left the Tigers at 4-0 on the season. Princeton moved up two spots from last week to third in both the USILA coaches' poll and Inside Lacrosse media poll. Princeton was ranked 12th in the preseason.
Barnes won 13 of 15 face-offs against UMBC, including the first 11. He also won the last one, with 57 seconds to play, after UMBC had cut a four-goal Princeton lead to one. He won every face-off during the crucial five-goal Princeton run of the third quarter, as the Tigers erased a 2-1 halftime deficit and built a 6-2 lead before UMBC ever had a full possession.
Barnes then won 7 of 10 face-offs against Manhattan Sunday. His .642 percentage for the year ranks fifth in Division I.
He shared Player of the Week honors with Brown's Andrew Feinberg, who totaled six goals and three assists in wins over Quinnipiac and Denver.
Fiorito made 10 saves against the Retrievers, including five huge saves during the second quarter to keep the Tigers in it. Fiorito also played the first 7:57 against Manhattan and made two saves while allowing a goal. It gave him a .667 save percentage for the week.
Fiorito ranks fifth in Division I in goals-against average (6.47) and ninth in save percentage (.614).
Princeton is averaging 50.5 shots per game, nearly six more than the next-highest Ivy team. Princeton has also scored four or more goals seven times in 16 quarters this season; Princeton did it eight times in 52 quarters for the 2008 season.
In other Princeton lacrosse news, Kevin Lowe '94, the all-time leading scorer in school history wtih 247 points and the only player to score an overtime goal to win an NCAA championship game and Major League Lacrosse championship game, was named a candidate for the USILA Hall of Fame class.
The Tigers are at Hofstra Saturday at 1.
