Monday Men's Lacrosse: Princeton Moves To Top Spot In Polls; Davis Named Ivy Player Of The Week
April 13, 2009 | Men's Lacrosse
The eight seniors of the Princeton men's lacrosse team were eighth graders the last time the Tigers were ranked No. 1. Freshmen Tyler Fiorito and Chad Wiedmaier were in elementary school as fifth-graders.
Princeton's consecutive 10-9 wins over Penn and Harvard, coupled with Virginia's 15-10 loss to Duke, vaulted the Tigers into the top spot in this week's USILA coaches' poll and Inside Lacrosse media poll.
Getting there has been a great accomplishment for a team that was 7-6 and finished in third place in the Ivy League a year ago. Staying there? That's going to be another story.
Princeton's first game at No. 1 will be this Saturday in Ithaca against Cornell, a team ranked fourth by the coaches and fifth by the media and the No. 1 scoring offense team in Division I at 13.9 goals per game. The accuweather forecast for Saturday in Ithaca calls for 61 degrees and sunshine in the afternoon.
Princeton has five wins over teams ranked in the Top 20 and three over teams in the Top 10.
Tommy Davis was named Ivy League Player of the Week after his six-goal, two-assist week. Davis scored four goals against Penn on four shots, and he also had the game-winner in overtime. He came back with two goals and two assists in the win over Harvard.
