Kovler Selected With 12th Pick In Major League Lacrosse Draft
May 28, 2009 | Men's Lacrosse
Mark Kovler's lacrosse career did not end with a first-team All-America selection earlier this month.
Kovler was selected with the 12th pick in the Major League Lacrosse draft, going to the Long Island Lizards with the third pick of the second round.
Kovler, a lefthanded midfielder with a cannon for a shot, figures to be a strong two-point threat in the professional outdoor league, which will play with six teams this season.
The third four-time All-America in Princeton lacrosse history, Kovler scored 34 goals as a senior for the second-highest single-season total in school history, behind only Josh Sims' 36 goals in 2000. Kovler finished his career with 91, third-best among Princeton middies.
Princeton, led by Kovler, went 13-3 this past year and tied Cornell for the Ivy League championship. The Tigers, who fell out of NCAA tournament contention a year ago when Kovler broke his ankle and missed the final four games, reached the top spot in the national rankings in mid-season.
Kovler was a first-team All-Ivy League midfielder, and all three first-team all-league middies were drafted in the first 12 picks. Cornell's Max Siebald went second to Denver, and Seibald's Big Red teammate John Glynn went 10th to Chicago.
Syracuse's Kenny Nims, who started and finished the miracle play that forced overtime in Monday's NCAA final win over Cornell, was the first overall pick, taken by Chicago.
Major League Lacrosse will have teams in Chicago, Denver, Long Island, Boston, Washington and Toronto this year.
