PRINCETON (9/12/09) -- Santa Clara's Nicholas Poggetti scored with 6.7 seconds remaining in regulation to lead the Broncos to a 7-6 win over the Princeton men's water polo team on Saturday evening at DeNunzio Pool.
Santa Clara built a 2-1 lead in a defensive first half before the teams traded the lead in the second half. Down 2-1 in third quarter, the Tigers scored three straight goals to build a 4-2 lead as seniors Douglas Wigley, Mark Zalewski and Matt Hudnall all converted. The Broncos countered though late in the quarter with three goals of their own, including Jack Wall's goal in the closing from beyond the 8-meter line.
Another goal from Wall early in the fourth quarter extended the Santa Clara lead to two goals, but the Tigers used goals from Zalewski and junior Tommy Parolin to draw even at 6-6.
Princeton drew its ninth ejection in the closing seconds of the game as the Tigers looked for a late goal, but Santa Clara goalkeeper Michael Wishart blocked junior Jeff Cole's shot and the Broncos countered resulting in Poggetti's game winner at the opposite end. Wigley had one last shot for Princeton but Wishart turned it aside as the Broncos took the win.
The loss dropped Princeton to 1-2 on the season. The Tigers complete their season-opening weekend tomorrow against Brown.
