Yale Tops Princeton In Key Ivy Men's Squash Match
January 30, 2010 | Men's Squash
In a tense match that lasted more than four hours in a packed Jadwin Squash Courts, the second-ranked Yale men's squash played the biggest points best to clinch a 5-4 thriller to take control of the Ivy League race.
“I thought Yale played very well and we gave it all we got,” Princeton head coach Bob Callahan said. “Chris and Kelly were heroic with their play after only a week of practice in the past 10 months. David Pena came back from 2-1 down and 7-10 in the fifth to almost pull it out. It was an incredible match and it was thrilling for all who watched.”
Playing a three-shift format, Yale led 2-1 after the first shift. Princeton senior tri-captain Santiago Imberton won in three games at No. 6 to get the Tigers a first point, but Yale's Ryan Dowd won 3-1 at No. 9. The match of the first shift was at No. 3, where Chris Callis nearly pulled off a win in his first match of the season.
After injuries kept him out throughout the 2009 portion of the season, Callis won two tight games to go ahead 2-0, but Fuchs fought back to even the match. A wild fifth game went to Fuchs 11-9.
Princeton junior David Letourneau won three close games at No. 2 to even the match at 2-2, and the turning point of the match was upcoming. Both the No. 5 and No. 8 matches went to a fifth game, and both came down to the very end.
And both went to Yale. Kelly Shannon, who made his Princeton debut this season Wednesday night, won a wild 18-16 in the second game, but he couldn't overcome a fifth-game deficit and fell 11-9.
The No. 8 match would be even closer. Princeton's David Pena rallied from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth game, and then rallied from a 10-7 deficit in the fifth. Pena held three match balls, but Berner overcame each and won 16-14.
By the time that match ended, Princeton freshman Todd Harrity won his closest match of the season at the No. 1 spot. Yale's Kenneth Chan rallied from an 0-2 hole, but Harrity was too strong in the final game and won 11-2.
Princeton needed to win both of its final matches, but it could only manage a split. Yale's Hywel Robinson won 3-1 at No. 4 to clinch the team win for the Bulldogs. Princeton's Peter Sopher ended the match with a 3-0 win at No. 7.
