PRINCETON (10/10/10) - The third-ranked Princeton field hockey team scored two early goals and added one late to defeat eighth-ranked Louisville and snap a two-game losing skid on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium.
Princeton got off to a fast start in the game and built a 2-0 lead in the game's first nine minutes. Princeton drew its first corner in the seventh minute and converted as Julia Reinprecht put in the rebound of a Kathleen Sharkey shot to make the score 1-0. It was the first goal of the season for Reinprecht who had inserted the ball and then had the rebound find her alone on the side of the cage.
Princeton made the score 2-0 less than two minutes later when Sharkey scored her 20th goal of the season. She carried it in to the circle from the left side and put it inside the post on the far side for the tally.
The Tigers outshot Louisville 9-3 in the opening half and outcornered the Cardinals 3-2. Princeton continued to pepper Louisville goalkeeper Erin Conrad in the second half, firing 13 shots on the Cardinal goal, but were only able to convert in the closing minutes when Michelle Cesan scored on a penalty stroke. The goal was her eighth of the year and her second successful conversion on a stroke.
Princeton outshot Louisville 22-7 in the win and had 11 corners to Louisville's five. Princeton goalkeeper Christina Maida made two saves for her third shutout of the season, while Conrad had 11 saves in the loss, including eight in the second half.
Princeton improves to 9-2 with the win while Louisville now stands at 9-5. The loss was the first for Louisville in regulation time. Princeton is now 3-2 this season against ranked opponents.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday when they host Brown at 12 noon.
