Field Hockey Team Falls 4-2 at #5 Connecticut

STORRS, Conn. (10/17/10) - Fifth-ranked Connecticut took a match-up of Top 5 teams as it topped the fourth-ranked Princeton field hockey team 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Sherman Complex at UConn.
Princeton fell behind 2-0 in the game and rallied to knot the game at 2-2 with 15 minutes remaining, only to have UConn regain the edge five minutes later. UConn jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening half as Ali Blankmeyer scored on a rebound in the 11th minute and Cara Silverman deflected on a shot on a corner in the 23rd minute.
Princeton quickly responded to the second goal and moved within one goal two minutes later on a goal from Kathleen Sharkey. The goal came on a direct corner following an insert from Julia Reinprecht and a stop by Alexandra Douwes, and was her 23rd goal of the year.
UConn held the one-goal edge over the next 30 minutes of game time before the Tigers drew even in the 56th minute. Sharkey played the ball into the circle where Katie Reinprecht tipped it in for her 11th goal of the season.
Tied at 2-2, UConn answered next when Anne Jeute scored on a baseline drive to go back ahead by a goal. From then on, UConn tightened up defensively and did not allow another Tiger shot in the win, and added a final goal when Marie Elena Bolles scored with eight seconds remaining.
Princeton outshot Connecticut 14-11 in the game and both teams had six corners. Christina Maida made two saves in the Princeton goal, while Sarah Mansfield had five saves for UConn.
Princeton dropped to 10-3 with the loss, while UConn now stands at 12-3. The Tigers return home next Saturday to host Harvard at 12 noon.
