Men's Water Polo Falls Twice on SoCal Opening Day

LOS ANGELES (10/2/10) - The 16th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team dropped a pair of games to Top 10 opponents on Saturday during the opening day of play at the SoCal Tournament. Princeton fell to second-ranked UCLA 13-2 in the opening game and dropped its second game 9-1 to 10th-ranked Loyola Marymount.
The Princeton defense held UCLA to a single goal in the opening quarter, but the host Bruins broke out for five in the second quarter to build a big lead. UCLA led 6-1 at the half and built the lead with another seven goals in the second half.
Mike Helou and A.J. Galainena scored the Tiger goals, while Mike Merlone and Ben Dearborn made a combined seven saves in goal.
In the second game, the Tigers fell behind 2-0 in the first quarter and Tim Wenzlau had the lone Princeton goal in the second quarter. Merlone had eight saves in the loss, while Princeton had 15 shots stopped by LMU goalie Andy Stevens.
Princeton is now 8-4 overall. The Tigers are back in the water Sunday morning at 9 a.m. PT against either 14th-ranked Santa Clara or 12th-ranked St. Francis.
