Women's Hockey Team Edged in Season Opener at Northeastern
October 22, 2010 | Women's Ice Hockey
BOSTON (10/22/10) - The Princeton women's hockey team fell 2-1 at Northeastern in its first game of the 2010-11 season on Friday afternoon at Matthews Arena. Paula Romanchuk scored on the power play in the second period to make the score 1-1 but a Northeastern goal four minutes later proved to be the game winner.
Each team scored its first goal on the power play. Northeastern's Rachel Llanes converted with the man-advantage at 15:25 of the first period, but Romanchuk's power-play tally at 6:32 of the second knotted the game at one goal apiece as she put home the rebound of a point shot.
Northeastern regained the lead four minutes later when Stephanie Gavronsky scored after Husky goaltender Florence Schelling hit her with a lead pass from the defensive zone.
That was it for the scoring as Northeastern maintained the one-goal margin over the remaining 29 minutes of play. Princeton put nine shots on Schelling in the final period as it looked to draw even but couldn't solve the netminder in the 2-1 loss.
Schelling finished with 25 saves while Cassie Seguin had 31 saves in the Princeton goal. Northeastern outshot Princeton 33-26. Defensemen Sasha Sherry and Rose Alleva assisted on the Princeton power-play goal. It was the first collegiate point for Alleva. Each team was 1 for 4 on the power play in the game.
Princeton is now 0-1 overall this season. The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m., at Providence.
