PROVIDENCE (10/23/10) - Providence goaltender Genevieve Lacasse made 35 saves to blank the Princeton women's hockey team 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena.
Providence outshot Princeton 44-35 in the game, firing 16 shots on goal in the first period. It wasn't until the second that the Friars broke through as Ashley Cottrell put her team ahead for good six minutes into the second period with a goal assisted by Laura Veharanta and Corinne Buie.
Princeton lost defenseman Rose Alleva to a hitting from behind penalty late in the second period and the Friars converted on the five-minute major early in the second period when Abby Gauthier beat Tiger goaltender Cassie Seguin for a 2-0 lead.
Jennifer Friedman added a power-play goal midway through the third period and Jessica Vella closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal in the closing minutes.
Seguin made 40 saves in the loss, while Lacasse stopped 35 shots for the win. Providence was 2 for 9 with the man advantage while the Tigers were scoreless in five power-play attempts.
Princeton falls to 0-2 with the loss, while Providence now stands at 6-2 overall. Princeton opens its ECAC Hockey slate next weekend when it hosts Colgate and Cornell at Hobey Baker Rink.
