PRINCETON (10/29/10) - Freshmen Sally Butler and Denna Laing netted their first collegiate goals and sophomore Cassie Seguin made 23 saves to lead the Princeton women's hockey team to a 2-0 shutout of Colgate on Friday night in the ECAC Hockey opener for both teams at Hobey Baker Rink.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period that saw Princeton outshoot Colgate 15-8. Colgate had the first good chances of the period and nearly took a 1-0 lead on the power play five minutes into the game when Jocelyn Simpson's shot trickled over the goal line just after the net moved off its pegs.
Princeton slowly took over control of the period thanks to three Colgate penalties. While the Tigers didn't score on any of the three power-play chances, the Tigers did garner nine power-play shots in the period.
Princeton continued to pressure in the second period and took a 1-0 lead at 6:23 of the second when Butler collected her first collegiate goal unassisted. She picked the pocket of a Colgate defender and went in on the Colgate net alone, reaching around Colgate goaltender Kimberly Sass and putting a shot off the post that ricocheted into the crease and off a Colgate stick before winding up in the back of the net.
The Tigers then killed a penalty and added a goal to make it a 2-0 lead. Sasha Sherry had a point shot deflected towards the net by freshman Olivia Mucha. The puck bounced to sophomore Alex Kinney who put a shot on net that was stopped, but she collected the puck and carried it behind the net before sending a centering pass in front to Laing for the goal.
Princeton led 2-0 after two periods and held the lead over the final 20 minutes for the win. Colgate pressured over the final period but couldn't crack Seguin, who made six of her 23 saves in the final frame to earn her first win of the year and her fifth career shutout. Sass made 26 saves in the loss for Colgate.
Princeton outshot Colgate 28-23 in the win. Princeton was 0 for 4 with the man advantage, while the Colgate power play went 0 for 6.
The win moved Princeton to 1-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the ECAC while Colgate is now 2-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the league. Princeton hosts second-ranked Cornell on Saturday at 4 p.m.
