Second-Ranked Cornell Tops Women's Hockey 5-1

PRINCETON (10/30/10) - Second-ranked Cornell used a three-goal first period to jump ahead of the Princeton women's hockey team in 5-1 win on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. Paula Romanchuk scored in the loss for Princeton.
Canadian Olympic Rebecca Johnston gave Cornell a 1-0 lead 1:24 into the game when Brianne Jenner sprung her on a breakaway and Johnston scored with a high shot. Chelsea Karpenko and Jenner would add goals midway through the period to push the Big Red ahead 3-0. Jenner would lead all players with three points on a goal and two assists.
Cornell extended its lead in the second period with two goals. Jenner stuffed in a rebound midway through the stanza and Catherine White finished a nice passing play with a goal late in the frame.
Romanchuk netted her second goal of the season five minutes into the third period to put Princeton on the board. Her backhand shot banked off the post and into the Cornell goal and came with an assist from Corey Stearns. It was Romanchuk's second goal of the season.
Cornell outshot Princeton 30-19 in the game. Cassie Seguin made 25 saves in the Princeton goal while Amanda Mazotta stopped 18 Princeton shots. Neither team converted on the power play. Cornell had three chances and Princeton had four.
Princeton fell to 1-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the ECAC with the loss. Cornell is now 4-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the ECAC. Princeton is back in action on Tuesday night at Quinnipiac.
