Men's Squash Opens 2010-11 Season With Hard-Fought 8-1 Victory
November 20, 2010 | Men's Squash
Princeton head coach Bob Callahan couldn't wait to start his 2010-11 season for a variety of reasons. First, he is excited to go into a year with as healthy a team as he has had in quite some time. And with the increased level of competitiveness throughout college squash, he knows there will far more close matches than was normally the case a few years ago.
Saturday's season-opening win over a revamped Frankoin & Marshall team is a prime example. The Tigers fought hard to earn an impressive 8-1 victory on its own Jadwin Squash Courts, though it hardly came easy. Two matches went the distance and another three went four games, including at the top two spots in the lineup.
Even at the No. 3 position, where Chris Callis won in three, he needed a 19-17 marathon victory just to take the first game.
It was a good win for Princeton, which will head into Sunday's Ivy League opener against a strong Cornell team with positive momentum. Sophomore Todd Harrity overcame a first-game loss to defeat Gabriel DeMelo 3, 5 and 2 in the final three, while senior David Letourneau also dropped the first set before winning 3, 7 and 8. Junior Jesus Pena, who is building off a thrilling win over Trinity in last season's CSA team semifinal, earned a 5-11, 11-1, 10-12, 11-3, 11-9 at the No. 6 position.
Even Princeton's lone loss was a hard-fought match. Senior Philip Sopher, whom Callahan has credited as one of his most improved players this season, held a 2-0 lead at No. 5 before falling 8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7.
