Men's Squash Opens Ivy Season With 6-3 Home Victory Over Cornell
November 22, 2010 | Men's Squash
Despite playing without one of its top players, the Princeton men's squash team earned a hard-fought 6-3 victory over Cornell Sunday afternoon on the Jadwin Squash Courts. The victory improves Princeton to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in the Ivy League.
It was not an easy match against a strong Cornell team, but head coach Bob Callahan was thrilled with the win.
"Cornell was very tough, especially with Kelly out injured but the guys came through beautifully," the veteran head coach said. "Philip Sopher and Peter Sopher were both clinical in their wins playing beautiful squash. Clay Blackiston played with complete focus and passion and was very impressive."
Princeton held a 3-1 lead after the even shift of matches. Both Peter Sopher and Blackiston won 3-0 matches, while senior co-captain Dave Letourneau was pushed early before defeating Alex Domenick 11-6 and 11-3 in the final three games. David Pena played a marathon at the No. 6 spot, but he fell to Rishi Jalan 11-9 in the fifth.
The second session would be even closer, but Princeton got the wins it would need to take the match. Sophomore Todd Harrity, the top-ranked player in college squash, overcame an opening-game loss to defeat Nicholas Sachvie in four games. Freshman Ash Egan, making his Ivy League debut, clinched the team win with a 3-0 victory at the No. 9 spot.
Princeton is now off for Thanksgiving week and will return to the court in two weekends for a trio of matches in New England. The Tigers will look to stay unbreaten in the Ivy League Dec. 4 at Brown and will wrap up the road trip the next day with matches against Williams and Middlebury.
