Men's Water Polo Falls in Eastern Semifinals to Navy 8-5

LEWISBURG, Pa. (11/20/10) - Number 18 Navy got off to a fast start and knocked off the 15th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team 8-5 in the semifinal round of the 2010 CWPA Eastern Championships. Navy led 4-0 after a quarter of action and although Princeton outscored the Midshipmen in the second half, the Tigers could not overcome the early deficit.
Down 4-0 at the half, Princeton scored twice to start the third quarter to close the game to two goals. Matt Hale scored both goals, the first on a five-meter penalty shot and the second coming with an extra man, but Navy added a goal late in the quarter to lead 5-2.
Both teams scored three times over the final frame, but Princeton could get no closer in the 8-5 loss. Jack Ruth scored on a 6 on 5 and at even strength to make the score 7-4 late and Hale added the Tigers final goal. Mike Merlone made six saves in goal.
Princeton is now 18-8 overall and will play for third-place tomorrow at 1 p.m., against 17th-ranked Bucknell.
