November 06, 2010 | Women's Ice Hockey
TROY, N.Y. (11/5/10) - Freshmen Denna Laing and Sally Butler each scored their second goals of the season to lead the Princeton women's hockey team to a 2-1 win at Rensselaer on Friday night as Princeton jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on the for one-goal win.
Laing opened the scoring midway through the first period. Classmate and linemate Olivia Mucha took advantage of bad Engineer pass in the defensive zone to gain control of the puck just inside the blueline. She then passed it up to Laing who beat her defender and lifted a shot over the shoulder of Engineer goalie Sonja van der Bliek to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Princeton outshot RPI 8-5 in the opening period and took the one-goal lead to the intermission.
The line of Mucha, Laing and Butler struck again midway through the second with Butler scoring this time. Laing won a battle along the boards just inside of the RPI blueline, knocking the puck to Mucha who skated to the net and drew the defense to her before feeding Butler on the wing for a goal off a wrist shot. With the goal, Butler now has both of Princeton's game-winning goals this season and she and Laing also scored both of Princeton's goals in its other win, a 2-0 shutout of Colgate last Friday night.
Rensselaer's Jordan Smelker trimmed the lead to a goal three minutes later on the power play, but RPI would get no closer, despite outshooting Princeton 8-1 in the final period and 17-9 over the final two stanzas.
Princeton netminder Cassie Seguin made 21 saves for the win while van der Bliek stopped 15 shots in the loss.
Princeton moved to 2-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the ECAC with the win. Princeton visits Union on Saturday afternoon.
