November 06, 2010 | Women's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (11/6/10) - Sally Butler scored in overtime to lift the Princeton women's hockey team to a 3-2 comeback win over Union on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink. The Tigers trailed 2-0 five minutes into the game and needed an extra-attacker goal to force overtime.
Union took full advantage of a slow Princeton start to score twice on its first three shots on goal and lead 2-0 at the five-minute mark. Emilie Arseneault opened the scoring at 2:38 on the power play and Callee Heywood made it 2-0.
Princeton cut the lead in half with a power-play tally in the second period from Corey Stearns. It was her first of the season and came with assists from Sally Butler and Sasha Sherry.
Princeton entered the third period still down a goal and looking for the equalizer. Princeton pulled its goaltender in favor of the extra attacker on a couple of occasions and eventually broke through with the tying goal when Stearns netted her second of the night with two minutes remaining with assists from Romanchuk and Sherry. Princeton fired 24 shots on goal in the third looking to tie the game.
Princeton then won the game in overtime when Butler scored her third of the season from Stearns at 1:13. The assist capped a three-point game for Stearns and Butler's goal was her third game winner in three Princeton wins this season.
Rachel Weber earned the win in goal in relief with seven saves. Cassie Seguin stopped 19 shots in the first two periods. Princeton outshot Union 50-28. Sherry led all players with 19 shots on goal.
The Tigers moved to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the ECAC with the win. Princeton hosts Dartmouth next Friday.
