PRINCETON (11/12/10) - Sasha Nanji recorded a hat trick to lead Dartmouth to a 3-2 overtime win over the Princeton women's hockey team on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton led 2-1 with less than two minutes left but Nanji scored late to force overtime and won it in the extra session.
Following a scoreless first period, Nanji put the Big Green on the scoreboard 4:39 into the second period with an unassisted tally. Nanji picked off a Princeton clearing attempt at the blue line and carried it on goal and scored on a rebound after her first shot was blocked.
Princeton answered though, scoring twice in the second period to earn a 2-1 lead. Alex Kinney scored midway through the period to draw the game even. Julie Johnson passed the puck up-ice to Olivia Mucha who worked past her defender to enter the slot on a 2 on 1 with Kinney on the right side. Mucha slid the puck across and Kinney redirected it for her second goal of the season.
The Tigers went ahead with 1:07 left in the second when they gained possession in the Dartmouth zone and cycled the puck low before Denna Laing scored her third of the season. Mucha held the puck behind the net and sent it in front for Laing's redirection. Current ECAC Rookie of the Week Sally Butler also had an assist on the goal.
Princeton held the 2-1 lead until late in the third period when Dartmouth converted on its second shot of the third period. The goal came from a shot at the right face-off dot that was tucked inside the far post. Amanda Trunzo and Reagan Fischer assisted Nanji's second goal of the game.
The late goal set up a chance for Nanji to win it in overtime. Caught following an icing Princeton called a timeout to rest its skaters on the ice. The Tigers won the ensuing faceoff but couldn't clear it, and after a Katie Horner shot was blocked, Nanji scored from the point to win it.
Princeton is now 3-5-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the ECAC following the loss. The Tigers host 10th-ranked Harvard Saturday at 4 p.m.
