PRINCETON (2/20/10) - The Princeton women's hockey team blanked Yale 4-0 in its home regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers wrapped up a sixth-place finish in the ECAC standings and will visit Harvard in next weekend's ECAC Quarterfinals.
Princeton jumped to a lead seven minutes into the contest when Paula Romanchuk followed up her own rebound and netted her ninth goal of the season after Melanie Wallace fed her the puck in front of the net.
The Tigers then made it 2-0 with five minutes left in the first when Charissa Stadnyk put a backhander by Yale goaltender Jackee Snikeris for her third goal of the season. Julie Johnson started the play with a shot that was blocked and the puck bounced off Caroline Park in front of the net and to Stadnyk for the goal.
After a scoreless second period, the Tigers doubled their total with two more goals in the third period. Heather Landry made it 3-0 with her 11th goal of the season at 6:58 as she finished a strong individual effort on behalf of Alex Kinney, who collected the puck in the neutral zone and weaved through the Yale end before feeding Landry for the one-time. Landry's goal tied her for the team lead in the category with Danielle DiCesare.
Johnson completed the scoring with her fourth goal of the season at 13:13 when Wallace's backhander from the top of the circles deflected off of Johnson for her fourth goal of the season. Stadnyk also had an assist on the goal.
Rachel Weber made 20 saves in the win for her second shutout of the season and Princeton's seventh, while Snikeris made 21 saves in the loss. Princeton outshot Yale 25-20.
The game also marked the final home game for the four members of Princeton's senior class: Maddie Endicott, Julie Flynn, Wallace and Stephanie Denino. The four were honored prior to the opening face off of the game.
The Tigers improved to 13-12-4 overall and 11-7-4 in the ECAC with the win. Princeton finished sixth in the final conference standings and will take on third-seed Harvard in a best-of-three quarterfinal series next weekend in Cambridge. Princeton took three of four points from Harvard in the regular season, winning on the road in overtime and tying at Baker Rink.
