CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (2/26/10) - Fourth-ranked Harvard took advantage of an early power play and didn't look back in defeating the Princeton women's hockey team 5-1 in the opening game of an ECAC Quarterfinal series at the Bright Hockey Center.
Princeton took a bench minor for too many players on the ice in the opening minute of the game and Liza Ryabkina converted for Harvard at 2:38 giving Harvard a lead it would not relinquish. Harvard built its lead to 4-0 before Princeton would get on the board.
An unassisted goal by Randi Griffin at 7:40 and Ryabkina's second of the game at 8:27 made it 3-0. Kate Buesser extended Harvard's lead to 4-0 at 14:49 before Laura Martindale put Princeton on the board with a power-play goal at 19:45. Sasha Sherry and Paula Romanchuk assisted on the goal.
Leanna Coskren closed the scoring when she scored at 15:15 of the second period.
Rachel Weber faced 38 shots in the loss and stopped 33, while Laura Bellamy got 16 of the 17 she faced in the Harvard goal.
Princeton falls to 13-13-4 with the loss. The teams continue their series tomorrow at 4 p.m., as Princeton looks to draw even and force a third game on Sunday.
