7th-Ranked Penn State Sweeps Men's Volleyball
February 27, 2010 | Men's Volleyball
The seventh-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions swept a gritty Princeton men's volleyball team Friday night in a Tait Division match at Dillon Gym.
Penn State, which hit .468 for the match and had two players with 11 kills, improved to 13-2 overall and 5-0 in the Tait Division with the 30-16, 30-13, 30-25 victory. The Tigers, which dealt with both injuries and illness in the starting lineup, fell to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the Tait. Princeton has a big match in the division Saturday when it hosts Saint Francis at 7 p.m.
Princeton got a match-high 12 kills from Vincent Tuminelli and a pair of service aces from Jeff Zhao. Scott Liljestrom recorded 15 assists for the Tigers, while John Morris came in later and recorded 10 assists.
"I was really proud of how the guys responded in the third set," head coach Sam Shweisky said. "It took a lot of character to come back and play the third set they way they did. Kudos to John Morris for stepping in and leading the team with a great display of energy and passion."
Princeton will now turn its focus to Saint Francis, which eliminated the Tigers in a 3-2 thriller during the EIVA quarterfinal round last season.
