Top-Ranked Crimson Tops Princeton 6-3 To Clinch Ivy Women's Squash Title
February 07, 2010 | Women's Squash
The Harvard women's squash team proved its No. 1 ranking was justified Sunday by clinching a share of the 2010 Ivy League title, although Princeton pushed the Crimson as hard as any team this season. The Tigers became the first team to take three matches off the Crimson this season, but that wouldn't be enough to clinch a second straight Ivy title for the Tigers.
The match started well for Princeton, who won two of the three matches in the first shift. Junior Jackie Moss continued her strong play with a 3-0 win over veteran June Tiong, while Princeton senior Kaitlin Sennatt won three tight games at the No. 6 spot over Katherine O'Donnell. The Crimson got its win from Bethan Williams, who overcame a first-game loss to win in four.
The second shift sent the momentum totally in Harvard's direction. Nirasha Guruge won 3-0 at No. 2 over Tiger freshman Julie Cerullo, and Sarah Mumanachitwon 3-1 over Katie Giovinazzo at No. 8. The biggest win came from freshman Natasha Kingshott, who topped Princeton senior Neha Kumar 3-1 at No. 5. While Kumar won the one lopsided game, Kingshott took three games by two points apiece for a crucial Harvard point.
Princeton senior Emery Maine gamely battled back from injury to win 3-0 at the No. 4 spot, but that wouldn't be enough. Crimson freshman Laura Gemmell won 3-0 at No. 1 over Amanda Siebert, and Johanna Snyder topped Nikki Sequeira 3-0 at No. 7.
Princeton will have two more home matches, including a Feb. 20 match against No. 2 Trinity, before heading to New Haven, Conn., to compete in the 2010 Howe Cup national championships. Princeton is the three-time defending national champion, with two of those wins coming over Harvard.
