Chanenchuk Named Ivy Rookie of the Week; Tigers Fifth In Both Polls
March 22, 2010 | Men's Lacrosse
Jeff Froccaro scored the game-winning goal in overtime in Princeton's win over Penn Saturday - and didn't have the best week by a Princeton freshman men's lacrosse player. Shows you how good Mike Chanenchuk's week was.
Chanenchuk scored six goals in two games, getting three against No. 2/3 North Carolina and three more against Penn in Princeton's Ivy opener, to earn Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors.
Chanenchuk was named for the second straight week after Froccaro won the first two, making those two the only players to win the honor this season.
Princeton, which lost 12-11 to Carolina after rallying from five goals back to tie it and then beat Penn 11-10 in overtime after trailing by six goals in the third quarter and four with eight minutes to go, is ranked fifth this week by the coaches and the media.
Chanenchuk scored Princeton's ninth and 10th goals to pull even with the Tar Heels before UNC pulled it out.
He then scored Princeton's first goal against Penn after the Quakers had shut out the Tigers for more than 26 minutes to start the game. Then, he helped spark Princeton's comeback with a huge goal with 18 seconds left in the third quarter to make it a three-goal lead, and his goal with 1:11 to play made it 10-9 Princeton.
Of course, the Quakers tied it with 17 seconds to play, setting up Froccaro's game-winner.
Chanenchuk leads Princeton with 14 goals and 15 points, while Froccaro is tied for third on the team with 10 goals. It has taken six games for both to reach double figures, making them the two fastest ever to reach double figures among Princeton freshman.
Princeton's game against Penn finished a stretch of three games in eight days and five games in 15 days, but the Tigers are now off until playing Saturday at 20th-ranked Yale.
Because of construction at Reese Stadium in New Haven, there will be no radio available for that game.
