Princeton Readies For Opening Of New Meadowlands Stadium
April 05, 2010 | Men's Lacrosse
Tyler Fiorito picked the wrong week to have a career-high in saves if being Ivy League Player of the Week was his only goal.
Fiorito made 17 saves against Brown Saturday in the New England Lacrosse Classic doubleheader at Gillette Stadium as the Tigers defeated the Bears 9-7 in a matchup of the last two remaining teams in Ivy play. The reason they were the last two was because Dartmouth goalie Fergus Campbell made 23 saves in the first game of the doubleheader in the Big Green's 8-6 win over Cornell.
And, to show you what kind of week it was in the league, Campbell had to share the Ivy Player of the Week honor with Yale's Brian Douglass, who scored 13 - yes, 13 - goals in two games this past weekend. Campbell put up seven goals and an assist against Penn in a 16-14 win Saturday and came back with six more goals against Detroit Mercy Sunday. That would be 12 more goals than Douglass scored against Princeton a week earlier in the Tigers' 7-6 win over Yale in New Haven, and Douglass' 13 goals for the weekend moved him into first place in the league in goals per game. For perspective, only three Princeton players - Jack McBride, Chris McBride, Mike Chanenchuk - have more than 13 goals for the season.
Still, even though Fiorito went unhonored by the league, he still had a huge game against a very tough opponent, one with some great finishers. Beyond just his 17 saves, he had 12 in the second half and eight in the fourth quarter.
It was his second straight huge game after a 15-save performance against Yale tied his previous career high.
Princeton is now 3-0 in the league, by a total of four goals, after one-goal wins over Penn and Yale and the two-goal win over Brown. The Tigers have played eight games, of which four have been decided by one-goal, including two in overtime, with one other decided by two goals.
Still, Princeton has come through at 7-1, and the Tigers are now ranked fourth by the media and fifth by the coaches in the current polls.
Next up for the Tigers is a break from the league, though it still will be a special day of lacrosse.
Princeton will help open the new Meadowlands Stadium, the 82,500-seat replacement for Giants Stadium as the home field of the Giants and Jets, as part of the Konica Minolta Big City Classic.
The day starts at 1 as Delaware takes on Hofstra and then continues with North Carolina vs. Virginia and ultimately Princeton vs. Syracuse at 6:30. Just in case you haven't seen the rankings, the last two games feature the team ranked No. 1 in both polls (Virginia) against the team ranked No. 2 in both polls (North Carolina) and the team ranked No. 3 in both polls (Syracuse) against Princeton.
Syracuse is the two-time defending NCAA champion, though Princeton defeated the Orange 12-8 at the Big City Classic at Giants Stadium last year.
