Third-Ranked Men's Squash Moves To 6-0 With Sweep Of Penn
January 28, 2011 | Men's Squash
After more than seven weeks off, and then an extra day due to snow, the third-ranked Princeton men's squash team wasted little time getting back into competitive mode. The Tigers improved to 6-0 overall, 3-0 in the Ivy League, with a 9-0 sweep of Penn at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
Princeton won 27 of the 29 individual games to stay unbeaten on the season and gain some needed momentum before Saturday's Ivy showdown against second-ranked Yale.
Sophomore Todd Harrity, the top-ranked player in college squash, cruised through his first two sets in a 3-0 win over Thomas Mattsson, while senior co-captain David Letourneau was equally impressive in a 3-0 win over Danny Greenberg at the No. 2 position.
Junior Chris Callis, who joins Harrity and Letourneau as former Ivy League Rookies of the Year, had a slight hiccup in his match at No. 3, but he controlled much of his match for an 11-1, 8-11, 11-3, 11-4 win over James Clark.
Head coach Bob Callahan was pleased to see some of his less experienced players pick up Ivy wins. Freshman Dylan Ward fought through two tough sets for an 11-9, 11-4, 12-10 win at the No. 8 spot, while sophomore Stephen Harrington, one of the most improved players on the roster, fought through extended play in the opener for a 13-11, 11-4, 11-6 win at No. 9.
Both Philip and Peter Sopher joined David Pena and Clay Blackiston as the other four winners for Princeton Thursday night.
The Tigers now face their stiffest test in league play. After winning the Ivy title four straight seasons, Princeton fell 5-4 to Yale last season in a match that featured four five-set matches, three of which were won by Yale. Princeton will need to win on the road; the Tigers will compete at Yale Saturday at 1 p.m.
