Men's Water Polo Clinches Regular Season Title by Topping GW 12-8
October 22, 2011 | Men's Water Polo
Princeton completes its eight-game Southern Division schedule with a 6-2 record. There still are league games remaining on the schedule, but none of the other five league teams have less than three losses. The title is Princeton's second in three years.
On Friday the teams traded goals in the first four minutes before Princeton went on a four-goal run late in the first quarter and early in the second quarter. Two goals from Weber gave Princeton a 3-1 lead at the end of the first and scores from Billy Tifft and Chris Cottrell made it 5-1 before GW scored late in the quarter to make it 5-2 at the half.
Princeton would extend the lead to six goals at the end of the third quarter on a Jack Ruth goal and the Tigers led by as many as eight when Connor Still scored on a counter, before GW finished the game with four-straight goals to trim the final margin to 12-8.
Weber scored four times for the Tigers while Still and Cottrell each netted two goals. Sam Butler led the team with two assists and Cottrell had a team-best three steals. Ben Dearborn made seven saves in three quarters for the win.
Princeton scored on two of eight man-up chances and missed a 5-meter shot, while the Colonials scored on four of eight chances and one of two 5-meter shots.
Princeton is now 15-7 overall. The Tigers host Fordham and Iona on Saturday at DeNunzio Pool.
