Men's Hockey Takes Down Providence 3-1

DENVER, Colo. (11/26/11) - The Princeton men's hockey team snapped a three-game losing skid with a 3-1 win over Providence on Saturday, Nov. 26 in the Tigers' second game of the Denver Cup at Magness Arena.
The Friars are receiving votes in the national poll. Princeton will have to wait for the results of the Denver/Miami game to see if they've captured second or third place in the tournament and who made the All-Tournament team.
Stefan Demopoulos put the Friars on the scoreboard at 3:05 of the first. Kevin Hart had the puck on the right boards and swung the puck along to Derek Army who fed Demopoulos who was waiting at the post. The goal came just 30 seconds after Princeton killed off its first penalty.Junior Rob Kleebaum tied it up with an unassisted goal at 10:39, his fifth goal of the year. He intercepted the puck at the blue line and sent it down low, but Providence picked it up and tried to send it back up the right side boards, but Kleebaum was at the top of the circle to one time a shot past goalie Alex Beaudry.
Freshman Tyler Maugeri scored his first career and the game-winning goal on the power play at 12:32 of the first. Providence sent the puck down the ice and sophomore goalie Sean Bonar stopped it and left it for freshman Kevin Mills. Mills came around the back of the net with the puck and up center ice. He dished off to Maugeri on the right side at the checkered red and Maugeri deked three defenders on his way to the goal.
Bonar would earn the secondary assist on the goal. The last time a Princeton goalie had a point was Zane Kalemba in a game against St. Lawrence on Feb. 14, 2009.
Sophomore Andrew Calof sealed the win for the Tigers at 16:05 of the second with his first goal of the season. Senior Derrick Pallis poke checked the puck free at the checkered red and freshman Aaron Kesselman brought the puck back into the zone. He sent a cross ice pass to Calof who fired over the blocker of Beaudry.
Princeton would receive five straight penalties in the third, including a hitting from behind major delivered to Jack Berger. The penalty kill did an excellent job of limiting Providence's chances.
Bonar made 37 saves in his third win of the season. Beaudry stopped 23 for the Friars, as Providence held a 38-26 edge in shots.
Princeton was 1 for 8 on the power play and 8 for 8 on the penalty kill, killing off 29 penalty minutes.
Princeton returns home for a three-game homestand, first hosting Rensselaer and Union on Dec. 2-3.
