Berger Scores Twice as Men's Hockey Rallies for 3-3 Tie vs. No. 9 Union

PRINCETON, N.J. (12/3/11) - The Princeton men's hockey team rallied from a three-goal deficit to come back and tie No. 9 Union on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Baker Rink, scoring three times in the third period. Sophomore Jack Berger scored twice and sophomore Andrew Ammon had one.
The third period would make all the difference.
Princeton came out of the second intermission with renewed energy and quickly got itself on the scoreboard. Ammon lit the lamp two minutes in. Freshman Tom Kroshus and sophomore Jeremy Goodwin both had shots blocked by the Dutchmen but junior Eric Meland got the loose puck in the slot and sent it to Ammon who squeezed the puck past goalie Colin Stevens and the right post.
Berger would get Princeton within one at 9:54 just five seconds after a boarding penalty on Union was released. Senior Derrick Pallis and sophomore Andrew Calof fought for the puck on the right boards just on the other side of the visitor's bench with Daniel Carr. Berger skated over to help out just as Calof dug the puck free and Berger fired a shot from just inside the blue line over the blocker of Stevens.
The Tigers kept up the pace and energy and with 1:14 remaining Berger would score the game-tying goal. Freshman Kevin Mills got the puck deep in the right corner and sent it center ice to Tyler Maugeri. Maugeri left it for Berger who came up the left side and wristed a shot from inside the circle that went in gloveside.
Union scored twice less than three minutes apart in the first period to take a 2-0 lead.
Trevor Mingoia had a wide open look, glove side, after a shot by Jeremy Welsh was blocked and Kevin Sullivan picked up the pick in the left circle and sent it into the slot where Mingoia was waiting for the goal at 10:37.
Brian Yanovitch made it 2-0 at 13:00. Ryan Forgaard settled the puck behind the goal and came up the right side. He dished the puck off to Yanovitch at the blue line and Yanovitch beat goalie Sean Bonar on a one-on-one.
Welsh would give Union the 3-0 lead at 10:07 of the second period. Sullivan spun in the right circle and fed Welsh who fired in a shot near post.
Stevens made 28 saves in goal for Union, while Bonar stopped 14 for Princeton, as the Tigers outshot the Dutchmen 31-17.
Princeton went unbeaten during the weekend after a 5-3 win over Rensselaer last night, and is 2-0-1 in its last three games.
Princeton hosts Harvard next Saturday, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m., at Baker Rink.
