John Doar '44 to Speak Thursday Night on Campus

Doar, the 2000 recipient of the Class of 1967 PVC Citizen-Athlete Award, and the 1975 recipient of Princeton's Woodrow Wilson Award, placed himself squarely at the center of the civil rights movement from 1960-67 as an attorney with the United States Justice Department and Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. He was with James Meredith as he tried to register as the first black student at the University of Mississippi in 1962, he helped prevent rioting after civil rights leader Medgar Evers was assassinated in 1963 and he was with President Johnson as he signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act into law, describing it as "one of the greatest pieces of legislation ever enacted" (read Doar's full bio here).
