Schreiber, Wiedmaier Named Preseason First-Team All-Americas
December 07, 2011 | Men's Lacrosse
There are worse ways for a team to enter a lacrosse season than with one of the four best midfielders, one of the four best defensemen, one of the two best goalies and one of the three best longstick midfielder in the country.
According to Inside Lacrosse, that's what the Princeton men's lacrosse team will take into the 2012 season.
Inside Lacrosse released its preseason All-America teams Tuesday, and four Princeton players were represented.
Sophomore midfielder Tom Schreiber and senior defenseman Chad Wiedmaier were first-team All-Americas, while senior goalie Tyler Fiorito was a second-team selection. Senior longstick midfielder John Cunningham was named to the third team.
In addition, Princeton was ranked 16th in the preseason IL poll and will play eight of the 15 teams ahead of it during the regular season.
Schreiber was the 2011 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-Ivy League selection after leading the Tigers in goals and assists.
Wiedmaier has been a first-team All-Ivy League selection each of his first three seasons, and no Princeton player has ever been named first-team All-Ivy four times. In fact, only one Ivy League player - Cornell's Max Siebald - has ever been a four-time first-team selection, and Wiedmaier and Cornell attackman Rob Pannell could both join Siebald this year.
Fiorito, a two-time first-team All-Ivy and three-time All-America, was named to the second-team, behind first-team selection Pierce Bassett of Johns Hopkins.
Cunningham, a two-time All-Ivy pick, was named as the third-best longstick midfielder in the country.
Princeton opens the season Feb. 25 at home against Hofstra, ranked 11th in the preseason poll. The other teams ranked ahead of Princeton on the Tiger schedule are No. 3 Cornell, No. 4 Johns Hopkins, No. 6 North Carolina, No. 7 Syracuse, No. 10 Villanova, No. 13 Yale and No. 14 Penn.
