George Mason Tops Men's Volleyball 3-1
February 19, 2011 | Men's Volleyball
Freshman Jeff Stapleton recorded a team-best 13 kills, while junior Scott Liljestrom added 34 assists, but the Princeton men's volleyball team was unable to knock George Mason off the list of EIVA unbeatens. Mason got 15 kills and five aces from Mark Jones in a 3-1 win at Dillon Gym.
Princeton struggled through the first two games, losing 25-14 and 25-16, but the home team found life in the third. After digging out of an early hole, the Tigers pushed ahead during a service run by middle Keenan McCarthy and put the game away 25-21 on a pair of Patriot errors.
Mason bounced back impressively in the fourth, hitting .407 for a match-clinching 25-17 win. The Patriots are now 9-3 overall, 4-0 in the Tait, while Princeton fell to 1-7 overall, 0-4 in the Tait.
Senior Vincent Tuminelli moved to libero for three games because of an injury and led the team with nine digs, while both Stapleton and Brad Howard had a team-best four blocks. Stapleton, who led Princeton with 17 points overall, recorded the Tigers' two aces.
Princeton will return to the court Tuesday night at 7 when it takes on Tait rival Rutgers-Newark at Dillon Gym.
