February 26, 2011 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (2/25/11) - Quinnipiac's Brittany Lyons scored with five seconds left in regulation to lift her team to a 2-1 win over the Princeton women's hockey team on Friday night in the first game of an ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series at Hobey Baker Rink.
Lyons goal was her second point of the game and came after Kelly Babstock won a battle behind the net and sent a centering pass to Lyons in the slot for the one-time goal and the win.
After a scoreless opening period the teams traded second period goals. Sasha Sherry put Princeton up 1-0 in the first minute of the period when she netted her eighth goal of the season. Danielle DiCesare fed her on the doorstep and Sherry redirected the pass under the pad of Bobcat goaltender Victoria Vigilanti for the goal. Paula Romanchuk also had an assist on the goal.
Quinnipiac answered at 12:13 of the second period off the rush as Bethany Dymarczyk scored on a blast from the right point. Lyons got control of the puck at the Princeton blue line and Quinnipiac went into the zone on a 2-on-1 with Dymarczyk opting to shoot.
Quinnipiac outshot Princeton 25-21 in the win with a margin of 11-5 in the decisive third period. Vigilanti made 20 saves while Princeton netminder Rachel Weber had 23 in the loss.
Princeton is now 16-13-1 overall. The Tigers and Bobcats will meet on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the second game of the best-of-three series.
