Rutgers Tops Princeton In EIVA Tait Opener 3-1
February 05, 2011 | Men's Volleyball
Both outsides Vincent Tuminelli and Jeff Stapleton recorded 13 kills apiece, but it wasn't enough for the Princeton men's volleyball team in its 2011 EIVA Tait opener. Rutgers-Newark remained undefeated on the season with a 3-1 home victory over the Tigers Friday night.
Princeton, which hasn't won a division opener since 2006, took the first set 25-21 after hitting .389 for the set. Rutgers got into gear from that point and controlled much of the play, winning 25-19, 25-18 and 25-20 in the final three sets.
There wasn't much offensive spark beyond the outsides. Senior middle Keenan McCarthy had five kills, while both sophomore Michael Dye and Pat Schwagler added four kills. Freshman Davis Waddell had 24 assists, while junior Scott Liljestrom had 12 assists. McCarthy had a team-high three blocks, while Tuminelli led the Tigers with six digs. Both Stapleton and Schwagler had three service aces, although Princeton as a team had 16 service errors.
Princeton will make its home debut Tuesday night when it hosts NYU at 7 p.m., and then it faces a daunting divisional road trip next weekend when it heads to Saint Francis (Friday, 7) and Penn State (Saturday, 4).
