Learfield Directors' Cup Final Standings
Maybe a chant of "We're No. 38" doesn't have a great ring to it, until there's a closer look at Nos. 39 and below.
Princeton's athletic department finished 38th in the final Learfield Directors' Cup standings for the academic year of 2010-11, making it the highest finisher not only in the Ivy League but also among FCS schools. Only Brigham Young, which finished 37th, finished higher than Princeton from a non-BCS conference.
The Directors' Cup attempts to determine the best overall athletic programs in Division I, Division II and Division III athletics each year, awarding points based on NCAA championship performance.
For the 17th time in 18 years, Stanford won the award as the top program in Division I.
Also for the 17th time in 18 years, Princeton was the top finisher in the Ivy League. Penn, in 68th, was te next-best Ivy school on the list.
South Carolina, who won its second straight NCAA baseball championship, finished one spot behind Princeton in 39th. Immediately behind South Carolina were West Virginia, Missouri, Michigan State, Iowa and UConn.
Princeton earned spring points in baseball, women's rowing, women's lacrosse and men's and women's track and field.
Princeton has never finished lower than 63rd and has only been out of the Top 50 three times.
Aside
from those three, Princeton has never been below 47th, and Princeton has
been in the Top 40 12 times in 17 years. There have been five Top 30
finishes, with an all-time best of 21st in 2001-02.
