Wiedmaier, Fiorito, Cunningham Selected In MLL Draft
January 14, 2012 | Men's Lacrosse
Call it a 7/10 split.
Chad Wiedmaier and Tyler Fiorito, starters together since Day 1 as freshmen on the Princeton men's lacrosse defense, will go their separate ways after graduation as they head into the professional ranks.
Wiedmaier was selected by the Hamilton Nationals with the No. 7 pick, while Fiorito went with the No. 10 pick to the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the 2012 Major League Lacrosse draft, which was held Friday night.
John Cunningham, Princeton's senior longstick midfielder, went 46th overall to the Denver Outlaws in the sixth round.
For the second straight year, MLL held its draft prior to the start of the college season. Princeton has had at least one player selected in every MLL draft except for one.
Wiedmaier, an All-America defenseman, was Princeton's first first-round selection since Ryan Boyle was the No. 2 pick of the 2004 draft. Fiorito, the All-America goalie, gave Princeton two Top 10 picks for the first time since Ryan Mollett and Trevor Tierney went 1-2 in the first MLL draft in 2001.
Wiedmaier is a three-time first-team All-Ivy League selection, and he has a chance to become the first Princeton player - and along with Cornell's Rob Pannell, the first overall pick in the draft, the second and third Ivy players - to be a four-time first-team All-Ivy selection.
Fiorito is a two-time first-team All-Ivy selection.
Cunningham has been Princeton's top longstick midfielder since the start of his sophomore year. He is the first Princeton LSM to be an MLL draft choice.
In addition to the three current Princeton players, Jack McBride, a 2012 Princeton grad, was selected by Hamilton with the 23rd pick. McBride is currently a graduate student at North Carolina.
Princeton opens its 2012 season Feb. 25 at home against Hofstra.
