Fifth-Ranked Cornell Tops Tiger Wrestling; Krop Wins Top-20 Showdown
January 15, 2012 | Wrestling
The Princeton wrestling team claimed three matches, including a Top-20 showdown at 141 pounds, but the fifth-ranked Cornell Big Red showed it was still the elite program in the Ivy League with a 30-9 win in Princeton's league opener.
The loss is only Princeton's second in the last six matches, and both have come against Top-10 programs. In both cases, the same three wrestlers scored victories, and each continued to make big statements about their place in the EIWA.
The highlight match of the day came at 141, where Cornell's 15th-ranked Mike Nevinger took on Princeton's 19th-ranked Adam Krop, the third-place finisher at Midlands. Nevinger had scored a win over Krop in the opening weekend of the season, but Krop came out of the match with a 3-2 win. He now has two wins against EIWA wrestlers ranked above him in the last month.
That win cut Cornell's lead to 9-3, as both Frank Perrelli and Nick Pena scored wins at the two lower weights. Cornell bounced back from the 141-pound loss with a 6-0 win at 149, but Princeton senior co-captain Daniel Kolodzik came back with an 8-3 win over Cornell's Craig Eifert.
Two matches later, Princeton senior Andy Lowy continued his impressive surge with a 12-6 win over Marshall Pepperman at 174. At that point, the Tigers were within six points of the 2010 and 2011 NCAA runner-up, but Cornell's power is in its upperweights, and they took over. Top-five standouts Steve Bosak (184) and Cam Simaz (197) were dominant to clinch the win for Cornell.
Princeton is now off for its Finals break, but it will return to the mat during the first weekend of February for a three-match tour of New England. Included in those will be Ivy matches against both Brown (Feb. 3) and Harvard (Feb. 4).
