Wrestling Goes 2-1 At Pitt Duals; Tiger Trio Records Perfect Days
January 08, 2012 | Wrestling
The Princeton wrestling squad made its return to team competition a winning one Saturday during the Pittsburgh Duals. The Tigers went 2-1 overall and challenged the 10th-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers deep into their final match of the day before falling 23-13.
Princeton opened in dominant fashion, defeating Davidson 48-0 in the first of three matches. The Tigers scored four falls in the match, including three in a row by Andy Lowy (174), Dan Santoro (184) and Kurt Brendel (197). The pin by Brendel, who is coming off a title at the Wilkes Open, came with only five seconds remaining in the first period.
The freshman duo of Chris Perez (133) and Rich Eva (165) also both scored victories for Princeton, which followed that win with a 26-10 victory over VMI. The Tigers raced out to a 23-0 lead in the match, including a 10-2 major decision by Adam Krop at 141. Krop is coming off his third-place finish at the Midlands Championships, and he was one of three Princeton wrestlers to record a perfect day.
The other two with perfect days were Perez and senior Daniel Kolodzik (157), another placewinner at Midlands, who scored a 10-2 major decision over Mike Burnett in a win that made sure there wouldn't be any late-match drama.
The tightest match of the day would come against Pitt, and Princeton left knowing it had an opportunity to pull off the upset. Junior Garrett Frey was seeking a 125-pound upset over a Top-20 opponent in Anthony Zanetta and held a lead, but the experienced Zanetta scored late to give Pitt a 3-0 lead.
Both Perez and Krop scored decisions to open a 6-3 Princeton lead, and 149-pound junior Zach Bintliff scored a pair of takedowns against 2011 All-America Tyler Nauman in a match that could have really ignited the upset attempt. Nauman caught Bintliff, though, and scored a pin to give Pitt the lead back.
Kolodzik scored a 10-3 win at 157, and Lowy earned a 13-1 major decision at 174 to even the team score at 13-13 with three matches remaining. The Panthers won the final three to complete the perfect day at their home competition.
Princeton will return to Dillon Gym next weekend for a pair of matches, beginning with a Friday night showdown against Millersville. On Saturday, Princeton will open its Ivy League schedule against Cornell, a top-five nationally ranked program.
