Wrestling Claims Fourth Win In Last Five Matches, Eyes Ivy Opener Tomorrow
January 14, 2012 | Wrestling
Princeton, which won two of three matches at the Pitt Duals last weekend, raced out to a 26-0 lead through the first five matches and never looked back. After both Garrett Frey and Joe DeQuinzio earned forfeit wins in the opening matches, 18th-ranked 141-pounder Adam Krop scored a 17-2 technical fall over Aaron Trimpey.
Junior Zach Bintliff reached the .500 mark for the season with a 7-3 decision over Steve Hess at 149, and senior co-captain Daniel Kolodzik matched Krop with his 22nd win of the season with a first-period pin of Zac Wawrzyniak-Bush at 157.
Millersville got on the board with a 6-0 win at 165, but senior Andy Lowy gave Princeton the momentum back with an 18-1 technical fall at 174. Lowy has now won seven of his last nine matches, including a major decision last weekend over No. 10 Pittsburgh.
Sophomore Dan Santoro recorded a third-period pin at 184, and senior Kurt Brendel became Princeton's eighth starter this season to record double-digit victories with a 10-2 major decision at 197. Millersville heavyweight Bradley Ladd finished the match with a first-period pin.
Princeton can now gear up for Saturday's Ivy League opener against the fifth-ranked Cornell Big Red (6 pm).
Cornell is 2-0 on the season, though it will open its Ivy season tomorrow in a 1 p.m. match at Penn. Cornell has four wrestlers ranked in the top six, including two-time reigning national champion Kyle Dake (157). 197-pound senior Cam Simaz is also ranked No. 1, while 184-pound senior Steve Bosak is ranked third and recently scored a 2-1 win over formerly top-ranked Robert Hamlin of Lehigh.
Two of the most anticipated matches of the day will come in the early weights. At 125, reigning EIWA champion Frank Perrelli of Cornell is scheduled to take on Princeton junior Garrett Frey. Perrelli is ranked sixth nationally, while Frey, a 2010 EIWA finalist, leads Princeton with 22 wins this season. Both wrestlers scored a win over the other last season, while this will be their first meeting of the year.
At 141, Krop will take on Cornell's Mike Nevinger, who is 17-7 on the year and ranked 15th. Nevinger scored a 4-0 win over Krop at the season-opening tournament in Binghamton.
