The summer workouts for both returning players and incoming freshmen are officially over. Despite the heat during Tuesday's opening practice, the fall is right around the corner, and so is the 2013 Princeton Football season.
Coming off its biggest turnaround in more than two decades, Princeton enters the upcoming season with both confidence and a sense of unfinished business. While the Tigers did improve by four games and finish in the top half of the standings, they also led in all three of their Ivy League losses and know that they were very close to a truly special season.
There are plenty of returners on both sides of the ball from the 2012 team, most of whom were (or will be) discussed during the GoPrincetonTigers.com video preview series, which continues Wednesday with a look at the linebackers. But Tuesday was no time for discussion; it was a time of action.
For the returners, like All-America defensive lineman Caraun Reid and All-Ivy offensive standouts Roman Wilson and Spenser Huston, it was a chance to get back to work and fine tune every minor detail, any of which could be a decisive piece to a potentially championship season. And for the freshman or previous backups, it was the first opportunity to make a lasting impression in their coach's eyes.
There will be more opportunities to come, both in camp and during the season, which begins Sept. 21 on Powers Field against Patriot League power Lehigh (6 pm, NBC Sports Network). After all, the long wait for one of the nation's most historic college football programs has finally ended.
It's time for football at Princeton.
