UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (10/26/14) - Penn State's Amy Peterson scored twice in the first period to lead the Nittany Lions to a 2-1 win over Princeton in the Tigers' season opener on Sunday, Oct. 26 at Pegula Ice Arena.
Penn State entered the game with a 23-day lead on Princeton's season, having played six games to date. Princeton had to shake off the rust in the first period where it was outshot and allowed two goals. The Tigers finished the next two periods with a 21-12 shot advantage but Celine Whitlinger was solid in net conceding just one goal.
Peterson converted on the team's first power-play opportunity at 5:38 with Kelly Seward and Bella Sutton assisting. Before the close of the period she expanded the lead with goal on a pass from Hannah Hoenshell.
Junior Cristin Shanahan scored the Tigers' first goal of the season, at 12:55 of the third period. Kelsey Koelzer and Brianna Leahy earned assists on Shanahan's first goal in 16 games.
Princeton pulled netminder Kimberly Newell with a little more than a minute on the clock in favor of the extra attacker. After Seward was called for hooking at 19:16, the Tigers had a two-player advantage but weren't able to get the equalizer.
Newell made 20 saves in goal for Princeton, which falls to Penn State for the first time in the young three-year series history.
Princeton was 0 for 2 on the power play and 4 of 5 on the penalty kill.
Princeton and Penn State will face off again tomorrow, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m.
