ITHACA, N.Y. (10/31/14) - The Princeton women's hockey team opened the ECAC Hockey season with a 5-4 win over No. 6 Cornell on Friday, Oct. 31 at Lynah Rink.
It is the second consecutive season that the Tigers won the regular-season game at Lynah Rink, after a 4-3 win in last year's finale.
Four different skaters scored goals and junior goalie Kimberly Newell made 33 saves in her second win of the year.
Sophomore Fiona McKenna had a goal and an assist, while junior Jaimie McDonell and sophomore Kelsey Koelzer had two helpers apiece.
McKenna put Princeton on the board with a beauty of a goal scoring on a centering feed from senior Brianna Leahy. Molly Strabley sent the puck down the right side boards and a streaking McKenna finished the play from her knees.
A power-play goal by Jess Brown knotted the game at 1-1 with 20 seconds to play in the first period.
Sophomore Molly Contini started a three-goal Princeton run just 32 seconds into the second period. Audrey Potts and Kiersten Falck scored 37 seconds apart as the Tigers grabbed a 4-1 lead at 2:53 of the second, forcing Cornell to call a timeout and pull goalie Paula Voorheis.
Sarah Knee cut into the lead with a Cornell power-play goal at 8:43.
Senior defender Ali Pankowski matched the power-play goal with one of her own at 18:01 as Princeton took a 5-2 lead into the locker room.
A short-handed goal by Emily Fulton came just 31 seconds into the first period and Brianna Veerman made it a one-goal game at 16:05.
The Big Red pulled Amelia Boughn for the extra skater with 1:13 remaining but could only manage one shot on goal that Newell turned aside.
Boughn made seven saves, while Voorheis had four as Cornell drops to 0-3 on the season.
Princeton, now 2-3, was 1 for 6 on the power play and 4 of 6 on the penalty kill.
Princeton faces Colgate at Starr Rink, tomorrow afternoon, Nov. 1 at 3 p.m.
