November 08, 2014 | Men's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. - The ninth-ranked Princeton University men's water polo team advanced to the 2014 CWPA Southern Championship title game with a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Johns Hopkins University at DeNunzio Pool.
Extending their win streak to nine games and improving to 20-3 on the season, the Tigers return to action on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 2:20 p.m. against the winner of Navy/Bucknell.
Jumping out to an early lead, Princeton went up 3-0 after back-to-back Thomas Nelson and Jovan Jeremic scores. With Princeton on top 3-1 after the first quarter, Jordan Colina opened up the scoring in the second to stretch the Tiger lead to three.
With neither team able to score for the remainder of the half, Princeton carried a 4-1 margin into the intermission. After battling the Blue Jays to a 2-2 tie in the third, the Tigers did just enough down the stretch, holding onto a two-goal margin of victory despite Johns Hopkins' 3-2 scoring edge over the final eight minutes.
Drew Hoffenberg turned in another solid outing, posting a hat trick for the fourth consecutive outing. Going 4-0 on sprints, Jordan Colina added a pair of goals and two steals, while Jeremic also had two scores. Nelson accounted for the Tigers' other tally.
Picking up his 16th win, Vojislav Mitrovic made 13 saves. Stopping three shots in the first quarter, he recorded four saves in second period. Preserving what was then a 4-2 lead in the third, Mitrovic made consecutive saves on a pair of 5-meter attempts, racking up a game-high five stops in the frame.
