PRINCETON, N.J. – Erasing a four-goal deficit, the ninth-ranked Princeton University men's water polo team captured its eighth CWPA Southern Championship with a 12-10 victory over Bucknell University at DeNunzio Pool.
Extending their win streak to 10 games, the Tigers upped their record 21-3 on the season. Downing Bucknell for the third time this year, Princeton improved to 42-14 all-time against the Bison.
Down 4-3 after the opening period, Bucknell netted five unanswered goals to start the second quarter. Trailing 6-4 with five minutes remaining in the half, Drew Hoffenberg narrowly missed an opportunity to stem the Bison tide, rattling a shot off of the left post. After another Tiger try rang off the far post, Bucknell tacked on two more tallies before a late Princeton goal cut the deficit to 8-5 at the intermission.
Falling behind 9-5 after another Bison goal early in the third quarter, Jordan Colina kick-started a 5-0 Tiger run with a hard shot from the left side that found the back of the Bucknell cage. Hoffenberg then made it a two-score game with a successful 5-meter attempt before another Princeton score with less than seven minutes to play made it 9-8.
Building on the momentum, Hoffenberg netted consecutive goals to put the Orange and Black back on top with under four minutes remaining in regulation. Coming right back, the Bison came up with the equalizer with 2:10 on the clock, but Jovan Jeremic broke the deadlock with just over a minute remaining.
Hoffenberg paced the Princeton offense with four goals and two assists, while Kayj Shannon and Curtis Fink added a pair of scores. Jamie Kuprenas finished with a team-high four steals, while Colina went 4-0 on sprints. Vojislav Mitrovic made two saves playing in the first half, while Alex Gow had six stops in the third and fourth quarters.
